INCEIF is pleased to announce that another faculty member, Adjunct Prof Mohamed Ismail, has been appointed as a member of the Shariah Advisory Council of the Securities Commission Malaysia. His appointment is for a term of 3 years ending June 2017.

Adjunct Prof Mohamed Ismail joined INCEIF as Adjunct Professor beginning January 2012. He holds an LL.B. (Hons.) degree from the University of Singapore (1969) and an LL.M. from King’s College, University of London (1974). He is a Barrister-at-Law of Lincoln’s Inn, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators. He is a Notary Public and a Practising Member of the Association of Chartered Islamic Financial Professionals Malaysia (ACIFP).

He was called to the Malayan Bar in 1970 and to the bar of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Singapore in 1992. He has been in private legal practice for 41 years and has had a varied practice. He was a partner at Skrine, Advocates & Solicitors, Kuala Lumpur until the end of September 2011 and has since retired from the firm. He has established his own legal practice in October 2011. From January 2001 to January 2005 he was a Director of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, the second licensed Islamic bank in Malaysia, as a nominee of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the Malaysian National Investment Corporation.

He drafted the first Islamic banking documents used by the banking industry which continue to be used till now with some minor amendments made from time to time. When these documents were challenged in Court, Mr Ismail was called upon to appear in Court to argue the cases and he won all the cases in which he appeared as counsel.

He is also the only lawyer to have practised Islamic banking in all its various aspects, namely as (i) solicitor, (ii) counsel, (iii) tutor/lecturer, (iv) workshop leader in Islamic banking and finance, (v) paper writer and presenter at seminars and conferences, (vi) author of articles in learned journals, both local and international, (vi) member of steering committee/working groups on Islamic banking, (vii) advisor to other legal firms and also (viii) as a banker.
