Q1 : How do I apply? |
A : You can apply through INCEIF's website or you can send all your application to Head, Graduate Studies Department, International Center for Islamic Finance (INCEIF), Second Floor, Annexe Block, Menara Tun Razak, Jalan Raja Laut, 50350 Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA. |
Q2 : When do I apply? |

A : Application for enrolment can be submitted anytime and successful applicants shall begin the study in the nearest available semester. |
Q3 : Is there an application fee? |
A : Yes, RM50 for Malaysian and USD20 for non Malaysian. |
Q4 : What is the application deadline? |
A : There is no application deadline. |
Q5 : What documents do you need in support of my application? |
A : An application is considered complete and ready for processing upon receipt of the following:
- An application form, fully completed and signed;
- 3-page Research proposal for PhD by Full Research;
- An academic transcript for each degree you are currently holding, or an interim transcript for degrees you are currently studying.
- Evidence of English Language proficiency e.g. TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent.
- Processing fee.

Q6 : Is there an electronic web-based application form? |
A : Potential applicants may fill up and submit the application form from INCEIF's website and see question no.1 for details. |
Q7 : Do I need a Master's degree to apply for PhD programme? |
A : Yes. |
Q8 : What if I have no Master's degree, can I still apply? |
A : You may apply to the MIF (Masters in Islamic Finance) at INCEIF and upon completion shall be converted to the PhD programme. |
Q9 : What should I do if I am not able to produce a relevant document until later, for instance a transcript for a degree that I have not yet finished? |
A : You can send us what you have; together with a note what you will send later. We may be able to make an offer that is conditional on information/documents to be supplied later. |
Q10 : English is not my first language - do I need to take and English Language test such as TOEFL or IELTS before I apply for admission? |
A : All candidates must submit MUET/IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent score which have been obtained of not more than 3 years. |
Q11 : Do I need to provide research proposal along with my application form? |
A : A research proposal is not essential however we still like to get an idea of the research areas which interest you. |
Q12 : If I'm offered a place, will I have to pay a deposit if I decide to choose INCEIF? |
A : You will be asked to pay a fee deposit of RM1000. The deposit will be deducted from the programme fee. It is not normally refundable if you change your mind about coming to INCEIF, but it is refundable if you are not able to secure a study visa. |
Q13 : Do I need to provide references and transcript along with my application form? |
A : You need to provide confidential references when you submit your application form. Your referees should be in a position to comment on your suitability as a PhD student. |
Q14 : Do you have any agents in oversea countries that I could talk to about the programme in which I'm interested? |
A : INCEIF has a number of agents based overseas who are very willing to advice on our programmes. Click to www.inceif.org for details. |
Q15 : What if I don't have research experience and still want to get into a PhD program? |
A : OFor those who do not have research experience will be prescribed to Research Methodology in Economics and Finance subject. |
Q16 : Is an interview required? |
A : Where applicable, the Admission Office may ask you to come to INCEIF for an interview. We may also conduct interviews by telephone or video conference. |
Q17 : When will my supervisor be assigned to me? |
A : You will be assigned a thesis /dissertation supervisor after completion of required courseworks and qualifying exams. |
Q18 : How will I be informed of your decision on my application? |
A : The final formal decision will be sent by mail to the address on your application. |
Q19 : If I am accepted, may I defer admission? |
A : INCEIF will consider deferring your offer to the next academic year. However, INCEIF may need to check that this is acceptable to your potential supervisor. |
Q20 : If I applied last year and was not admitted, can I re-apply? |
A : Yes. You should re-submit a fresh application and other documentation. |
| Fees |
Q1 : Do you have any scholarship in which I could apply? |
A : Limited financial assistance is available to qualified candidates in the form of fee waiver and teaching assistantship. |
Q2 : What are the fees for your PhD programmes? |
A : Total fees is RM32,000.00, subject to change. |
Q3 : Can I pay my fees by installments? |
A : It is currently possible for you to pay your fees in 6 installments, minimum installment must be paid before candidate proceed to the next academic semester. |
Q4 : Can I come as a self-funded student in the hope of finding funding once I arrive? |
A : No. Self-sponsored student must provide proof of financial support for the whole duration of your study at INCEIF. |

| Registration Arrangements |
Q1 : Do you offer any distance learning programmes? |
A : Our PhD programme is a conventional program and the programme require attendance at INCEIF, Malaysia. |
Q2 : If I want to apply for PhD programme, do I have to take a Master's degree first? |
A : Yes. A Master's degree is a minimum entry requirement for PhD programme. |
Q3 : How long does a PhD usually take to complete? |
A : This will depend entirely on your background and the nature of your research topic. For PhD by coursework and dissertation you should expect to take at least 24 months full-time or 36 months part-time. For PhD by Research you should expect to take at least 24 months full-time or 48 months part-time. |
Q4 : If I'm offered a place and can not take it up, can I hold it over to the next year? |
A : If your circumstances change, and you can not take up a place, INCEIF will consider deferring your offer to the next academic year. However, INCEIF may need to check that this is acceptable to your potential supervisor. |

Q3 : How many courses do the PhD students take? |
A : For PhD by Full Research, the candidate is required to take 22 credit hours (7 subjects) and for PhD by Coursework and Dissertation; the candidate is required to take minimum of 40 credit hours of coursework (13 subjects). |
Q4 : How long does it take to complete formal courses in the PhD program? |
A : It takes a minimum of 24 months to complete formal courses for PhD by Coursework and Dissertation. |
Q5 : Is it possible to transfer to the PhD study at INCEIF from another University? |
A : Yes. You have to submit the usual application form and enclose a note explaining your circumstances. When an application for transfer is accepted, the amount of 'credit allowed for study elsewhere is determined on case-by-case basis. |
